Chapter 6

Maddox yanked back.
“This is illegal. She can’t record me. She’s nobody.”
Rachel looked at him.
For the first time, there was sadness in her expression.
Not weakness.
Disappointment.
“You kept saying that about everyone, didn’t you?”
Maddox stared at her.
“What?”
“Nobody. That’s what you called them.”
She turned slightly, looking at the soldiers around the room.
“Private Harper was nobody when you locked him outside the barracks.”
Miles’ face went pale.
“Corporal Reeves was nobody when you made him clean blood off the gym floor after you pushed him during combatives.”
A corporal near the back swallowed hard.
“Specialist Lane was nobody when she reported missing medical supplies, and you threatened to destroy her career.”
A female medic standing by the coffee station covered her mouth.
Maddox’s face changed.
Not fear yet.
Rage.
“You’ve been talking to my soldiers?”
Rachel’s voice sharpened.
“No. Your soldiers finally started talking because someone listened.”
Maddox pointed at her again.
“You don’t know anything about this unit.”
Rachel pushed her sleeve back.
Just a little.
A small metal badge caught the cafeteria light.
Not big.
Not flashy.
But official.
Maddox saw it.
His mouth opened.
The blood drained from his face.
“No way…”
Rachel lowered her arm, but it was too late.
The whole room had seen enough.
Maddox whispered, “Who are you?”
Rachel took one step closer.
May you like
“My name is Rachel Vale. Office of the Inspector General. Department of the Army.”
