Chapter 1

The tray hit the cafeteria floor so hard that every conversation in the room died at once.
Mashed potatoes splattered across polished boots.
Gravy streaked over the tile.
A plastic cup bounced twice, spilled water across the floor, and rolled until it tapped the toe of a young woman standing completely still.
She was not in uniform.
That was the first thing everyone noticed.
Plain dark jacket.
Jeans.
Hair tied back.
No rank.
No name tape.
No reason, at least in their eyes, to be standing in the middle of a military dining facility at Fort Redstone with a lunch tray in her hands.
Sergeant Cole Maddox stepped in front of her like he owned the entire building.
He was broad-shouldered, red-faced, and loud enough to make young soldiers flinch before he even spoke.
He pointed straight at her face.
“Civilians don’t eat here.”
The woman looked down at the food across her shoes.
Then she looked at the dozens of soldiers watching from every table.
Some stared.
Some lowered their eyes.
Some looked angry but afraid to move.
Nobody laughed.
Not yet.
Because everyone at Fort Redstone knew Sergeant Maddox.
And everyone knew what happened when someone challenged him.
The woman’s name was Rachel Vale.
But no one in that cafeteria knew that.

To them, she was just a stranger who had walked into the wrong room at the worst possible time.
Read Part 2 to find out why Rachel walked into that cafeteria on purpose.
