Chapter 7

The words moved through the cafeteria like a shockwave.
A fork slipped from someone’s hand.
A chair scraped backward.
Miles Harper stared at her like he had just watched a ghost become real.
Rachel continued.
“For the past nine days, I’ve been assigned undercover to investigate multiple reports of abuse, intimidation, misuse of authority, retaliation, theft of supplies, and falsified disciplinary records inside this company.”
Maddox said nothing.
For the first time since she walked in, he had no insult ready.
Rachel looked at the ruined food on the floor.
“You made it easier than I expected.”
Price stepped forward.
“Sergeant Cole Maddox, you are relieved of duty pending investigation.”
Maddox snapped back to life.
“You can’t relieve me. I answer to Captain Lowell.”
Rachel’s eyes did not blink.
“Captain Lowell was removed from command at 0600 this morning.”
The room gasped.
Maddox stared at her.
Rachel’s voice stayed steady.
“He admitted he ignored complaints because your numbers looked good on paper.”
Maddox shook his head.
“No.”
“He also admitted you pressured soldiers to sign false statements.”
“No.”
“And he confirmed you ordered staff to keep certain soldiers from medical treatment after training injuries.”
The medic at the coffee station began crying silently.
Rachel looked toward her.
“I’m sorry it took this long.”
Maddox stepped back.
He looked around the cafeteria, searching for someone to defend him.
No one did.
Not one soldier stood.
Not one officer spoke up.
For months, Maddox had ruled that room with fear.
