Chapter 7

Briggs looked around at the soldiers who used to fear him.

Nobody moved to help him.

Nobody laughed now.

The range officer spoke quietly.

“Captain, there’s more.”

He turned the tablet outward.

“Private Carter fired five qualifying rounds during calibration this morning. All five center mass. One perfect grouping.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Not because she was surprised.

Because for the first time, someone had said the truth out loud.

Captain Bennett nodded.

“Read her official result.”

The range officer stood straight.

“Private Emily Carter. Final marksmanship qualification. Passed with distinction.”

A wave of whispers rushed through the formation.

Mason Reed broke first.

He clapped once.

Then again.

Soon the entire line was clapping.

Not wild.

Not disrespectful.

But firm.

Human.

The sound rolled over the range like something long overdue.

Emily stood there with dust on her boots and sunlight in her eyes, trying not to cry.

Briggs was escorted past her.

For the first time, he looked small.

As he passed, he muttered, “You only passed because of your father’s name.”

Emily turned.

“No,” she said.

The MPs stopped him.

Emily stepped closer, voice steady enough for everyone to hear.

“I passed because you couldn’t erase the truth fast enough.”
