Chapter 6
Captain Bennett’s voice carried across the sand.
“Your father served with Sergeant Briggs.”
Emily could barely breathe.
“He also filed the report that ended Briggs’ first attempt at promotion after a live-range safety violation.”
The soldiers stared.
Emily looked at Briggs.
Now everything made sense.
The extra drills.
The missing scores.
The insults.
The way Briggs had stared at her name on the first day like it was a threat.
He had not hated her because she was weak.
He had hated her because she was Daniel Carter’s daughter.
And every time she stood back up, she reminded him of the man who had exposed him.
Briggs tried one last time.
“That report was political. Her father ruined my career.”
Captain Bennett’s eyes turned cold.
“No, Sergeant. Your own misconduct did.”
The words landed like a hammer.
Then Briggs lunged for the paper score sheet.
Captain Bennett caught his wrist before he could grab it.
Two military police officers stepped forward from near the command tent.
They had been waiting there the whole time.
Emily realized then this had not started with her final shot.
Captain Bennett had already been watching.
