Chapter 4
Captain Bennett walked out from the command tent.
No hurry.
No shouting.
But every soldier straightened when they saw her.
“Sergeant Briggs,” she said, “step away from the trainee.”
Briggs forced a laugh.
“Captain, Private Carter is being dramatic. She fired one good round and thinks—”
“I said step away.”
The laughter died in his throat.
Captain Bennett took the score sheet from the table.
Her expression darkened.
“Private Carter,” she said, “how many times have you requested a score review?”
Emily swallowed.
“Three times, ma’am.”
“And how many times was it approved?”
“None, ma’am.”
Briggs cut in.
“Because she failed to meet the standard.”
Captain Bennett turned the paper around.
“Then explain why the electronic log shows she exceeded the standard on every recorded range test since week six.”
The entire line went silent.
Briggs blinked.
“That’s not possible.”
Captain Bennett’s voice sharpened.
“That seems to be your favorite phrase today.”
A murmur moved through the soldiers.
Emily stood still, but her heart slammed against her ribs.
She had known something was wrong.
She had known her shots were better than the scores he posted.
But knowing and proving were two different things.
Then Captain Bennett lifted a tablet.
“Her shots were being logged correctly,” she said.
Her eyes moved to Briggs.
