Mason Reed whispered, “No way.”
Another soldier muttered, “He changed them?”
Captain Bennett looked straight at Briggs.
“Someone manually altered her score sheets after each qualification attempt.”
Briggs pointed at Emily.
“She’s manipulating you. She’s always wanted special treatment.”
Emily’s face tightened.
But she stayed quiet.
Captain Bennett stepped closer to him.
“Special treatment?” she said. “You mean the kind where her name was flagged before she even arrived?”
Briggs went pale.
That sentence hit Emily differently.
Her stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?” she asked softly.
Captain Bennett’s eyes shifted to her.
For the first time, her expression showed sympathy.
“Private Carter, I wasn’t going to say this in front of the class unless it became necessary.”
Briggs’ voice turned hard.
“Captain, don’t.”
But it was too late.
Captain Bennett reached into a folder and pulled out an old photograph.
She held it up.
It showed a younger Sergeant Briggs standing beside a group of soldiers years ago.
And in the center was Staff Sergeant Daniel Carter.
Emily’s father.
Younger.
Smiling.
Alive.
Emily’s breath caught.
