Chapter 1

The last thing Private Emily Carter heard before stepping onto the final firing line was laughter.

Not loud laughter.

Worse.

The quiet kind.

The kind soldiers use when they have already decided someone does not belong.

She walked alone across the dusty training range at Fort Redstone, her rifle held low and safe at her side.

The Arizona sun burned over the field.

Rows of soldiers stood behind the line, waiting for their final qualification test.

For most of them, this was just the last step before graduation.

For Emily, it felt like a trial.

Because standing at the end of the line was Sergeant Calvin Briggs.

Her instructor.

Her problem.

And the man who had spent twelve weeks trying to break her.

Briggs looked at the score sheet.

Then he threw it down into the dirt at her boots.

“You don’t have a chance of passing this,” he said.

A few soldiers looked away.

A few smirked.

Emily did not move.

She bent down.

Picked up the score sheet.

Dusted it off.

Then placed it neatly back on the table.

“Then you should look carefully,” she said.

The range went still.
