Chapter 3 - The Envelope That Was Never Meant To Be Found

Ethan didn’t open the message.
That frightened me more than if he had.
A man like Ethan Hartwell opened every email, every contract, every legal document within seconds.
But this message?
He turned his phone face down.
The female attorney noticed.
So did I.
“Who was that?” I asked.
“No one.”
The answer came immediately.
Another lie.
I looked at Rose sleeping peacefully against me.
She had no idea that the room around her was filled with people who had been making decisions about her life before she ever opened her eyes.
I remembered the first time I realized Ethan had changed.
Before the money.
Before the headlines.
Before everyone called him a genius.
He was just Ethan.
The man who made coffee for me when I worked late.
The man who promised we would never become strangers.
But success changed him slowly.
A private office.
Secret meetings.
A second phone.
Long nights with explanations that never matched.
Then came the day I told him I was pregnant.
His first reaction wasn’t happiness.
It was suspicion.
“How do I know this is mine?”
Those words stayed with me.
Because they weren’t just a question.
They were an accusation.
Now, standing across from him, I realized something worse.
Someone had convinced him to believe a lie.
The envelope sat between us.
Finally, Ethan picked it up.
His fingers hesitated before opening it.
Inside was a copy of a medical record.
Rose’s birth information.
And one name.
Mine.
His.
The room became quiet again.
“Where did you get this?” he asked.
“Your assistant’s office.”
His eyes narrowed.
“My assistant?”
I nodded.
“Six months ago, someone deleted my medical records from your company insurance system.”
The attorneys exchanged looks.
Ethan looked genuinely surprised.
For the first time, I believed he might not know everything.
But then his phone buzzed again.
This time, he looked.
And I saw the fear return.
“What did they say?” I asked.
He locked the screen.
“Nothing.”
I stepped closer.
“Ethan, whoever sent that message knows about Rose.”
His silence answered me.
And then the boardroom door opened.
A woman stood there.
Someone I hadn’t seen since the night I left Ethan’s home.
Someone who should never have been involved in our divorce.

His former chief of staff.
