Chapter 2 - The Man Who Claimed He Never Knew Her

Ethan didn’t touch the divorce papers.
He didn’t look at the attorneys.
He only looked at Rose.
Then he looked at me.
“Emma,” he whispered, “what is this?”
The question almost made me laugh.
Almost.
Because for months, that exact question was the one I had begged him to ask.
But he never did.
When I told him I was pregnant, he didn’t ask how I felt.
He asked who else knew.
When I showed him the first ultrasound, he didn’t smile.
He called his attorney.
And when I disappeared from his penthouse six months ago, he told everyone I had left him.
A story people believed because Ethan Hartwell was famous for controlling every situation.
Except this one.
“This is your daughter,” I said.
His jaw tightened.
“No.”
The word came fast.
Too fast.
The attorneys noticed.
So did I.
A person who was truly shocked would ask questions.
A person who already knew something was wrong would deny immediately.
“Ethan,” the female attorney said carefully, “you need to be certain before making any statement.”
He ignored her.
“You expect me to believe you walked in here with a baby and suddenly everything changes?”
I stared at him.
“You mean the baby you were told didn’t exist?”
His expression changed for half a second.
A tiny crack.
But I saw it.
“You never told me you had proof,” he said.
There it was.
Not “I didn’t know.”
Not “I didn’t believe you.”
You never told me you had proof.
My stomach tightened.
Because that sentence revealed something important.
Ethan wasn’t hearing this for the first time.
He was hearing that I had survived without him.
The male attorney slowly picked up the fallen documents.
“Mr. Hartwell, perhaps we should review the situation privately.”
“No,” Ethan said.
His eyes stayed on Rose.
“I want the truth.”
I almost told him everything.
The pregnancy.
The messages.
The night I was forced to leave.
The person who helped destroy our marriage.
But I stopped.
Because I had learned one painful lesson.
Trusting Ethan without evidence had nearly destroyed me.
So I reached into my bag and placed a small envelope on the table.
His name was written across the front.
His expression changed.
“Where did you get that?”
I looked at him.
“I found it where you thought I would never look.”
He opened his mouth.
But before he could speak, his phone vibrated.
He glanced down.
The color drained from his face.

Because the message on his screen came from someone who should have had no reason to contact him.
