Chapter 2 - The Daughter I Raised

People later asked what hurt most.

The punch.

The dragging.

The humiliation.

None of those.

The worst moment was seeing Alyssa's face.

There was no anger.

No hesitation.

Only calculation.

She looked at me the way someone looks at an obstacle.

Not a mother.

I had raised Alyssa alone after her father died from a construction accident when she was twelve.

I worked double shifts.

Skipped vacations.

Sold my wedding jewelry so she could attend college.

Every Christmas I told her one thing.

"Home is always yours."

After graduation she met Brandon.

He was handsome.

Confident.

Charming in front of strangers.

But every conversation somehow became about money.

Investments.

Property.

Insurance.

Retirement accounts.

He always wanted to know who owned what.

At first I assumed he simply worried about the future.

Then he started asking questions about my husband's life insurance.

I lied.

I told him it had all been spent years earlier.

He smiled...

but I noticed disappointment behind his eyes.

Months later, Alyssa became distant.

Phone calls became shorter.

Holiday visits became rare.

When I offered to help around the house, Brandon always found a reason I should leave.

Eventually even Lily—my granddaughter—was kept from me.

Patricia, Brandon's sister, once joked,

"Maybe your mother has more money than she's admitting."

Everyone laughed except Brandon.

He wasn't joking.

I didn't know it then...

May you like

but someone had already searched through my filing cabinet while I was away one weekend.

👉 The first theft happened months before the attack—and it wasn't money they were looking for.
