Chapter 1 - You Were Warned

Brandon’s fist slammed into the side of my face before I could finish speaking.

The insurance folder flew from my hands.

Pages scattered across the porch and drifted into the cold Sunday breeze.

My knees buckled.

I caught myself on one hand before my head struck the concrete.

“You were warned,” Brandon growled.

I looked up in disbelief.

My own daughter stood behind him.

She didn't scream.

She didn't try to stop him.

She simply watched.

I reached toward the insurance papers.

“Alyssa…”

Before I could grab them, my daughter grabbed a fistful of my coat and hair.

She dragged me backward across the doorway.

Concrete scraped my hand.

My shoulder burned.

“Alyssa… stop.”

She released me near the porch steps as though I weighed nothing.

Brandon blocked the doorway.

Alyssa stepped over the scattered papers.

She leaned close enough for only me to hear.

“It’s three million.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

Not the attack.

The reason for it.

Across the yard, two neighbors stood frozen.

Neither moved.

Neither spoke.

Brandon kicked my folder toward the driveway.

“Stay gone.”

He and Alyssa turned toward the front door.

They thought it was over.

Then I noticed something blinking beside the door.

The little blue light on their doorbell camera.

It had recorded everything.

At almost the same moment, one neighbor quietly raised her phone.

“I saw everything.”

Far down the street...

a siren began to grow louder.

👉 Brandon thought one punch would silence me forever—but the camera had already captured what happened before he ever touched me.
