Chapter 5 - The Signature Margaret Never Checked

Claire bent over the waiver.

Dozens of people watched.

Margaret stood beside her with a victorious smile.

Victor remained near the coffin, one hand inside his pocket around the false key.

Claire began writing.

The pen moved slowly across the signature line.

Margaret did not bother to look closely.

She turned toward the relatives and spoke loudly.

“At least she understands that some things belong to blood.”

Claire finished and slid the document back.

Margaret snatched it away.

“Finally.”

Victor leaned toward her.

“Get it notarized immediately.”

The family attorney, Leonard Price, rose from the first row. He had represented the Vale family for twenty years.

He walked forward with a notary stamp and examined the page.

His eyebrows lifted.

“Margaret.”

“What?”

“This is not her signature.”

Margaret looked down.

Claire had not written Claire Vale.

She had written:

SIGNED UNDER THREAT — DOCUMENT RECORDED.

Margaret’s face changed.

The room became completely silent.

Claire straightened.

“You tried to force me to surrender my husband’s estate while standing beside his coffin.”

Margaret tore the page in half.

“You stupid little—”

Claire stepped back.

“Everyone saw it.”

Margaret looked around at the phones recording her.

“Turn those off!”

Nobody moved.

Victor seized Claire’s arm.

“Where are the original files?”

Claire looked at his hand.

“You are hurting me.”

“Answer me.”

Margaret moved between them.

“She does not know anything.”

Victor’s control slipped.

“She knows enough to ruin us.”

The words hung in the air.

Claire’s pulse thundered.

So did Daniel’s beneath the satin.

Detective Mason leaned closer to the audio feed.

Victor had almost confessed.

Margaret realized it too.

She grabbed Victor’s wrist.

“Stop talking.”

But Victor had spent weeks believing Daniel was dead and Claire was helpless.

His fear had turned to rage.

“He kept copies of the cardiac trial reports. If those reports reach the FDA, the launch is over.”

Gasps spread through the chapel.

Several Vale Biotech employees were among the mourners.

One of them whispered, “What cardiac reports?”

Victor immediately understood what he had said.

His face drained of color.

Margaret turned toward Claire with pure hatred.

“What did you do?”

Claire lifted the white rose.

“I listened.”

The small light beneath the petals blinked.

Margaret stared at it.

May you like

Then she lunged.

👉 Margaret had finally seen the microphone—and her next move could destroy the only recording that proved Daniel had been betrayed.
