Chapter 10 - The Fight Over the Coffin

Claire braced her shoulder beneath the lid.
Victor pushed down from the opposite side.
The hinge creaked.
Daniel lay trapped between them, still unable to move.
“Help me!” Claire shouted.
Leonard grabbed the lid beside her.
One of Daniel’s cousins, Ethan, stepped away from the relatives and joined them.
For years, Ethan had believed Margaret’s stories about Claire.
Now he had watched Margaret strike her, threaten her, and attempt to destroy Daniel’s will.
He planted both hands beneath the lid.
“Back away, Victor.”
Victor’s face twisted.
“This man is dead.”
“No,” Claire said. “You only need him to be.”
The security guard hesitated.
Margaret screamed at him.
“Close it!”
That was enough for the guard.
He stepped away from the coffin.
“I did not agree to this.”
Victor shoved harder.
The lid dropped another inch.
Then Daniel’s hand shot upward.
His palm struck the inner edge.
Everyone froze.
Daniel’s eyes opened.
His first breath came sharp and painful.
Claire caught his shoulder as he tried to rise.
Across the chapel, someone screamed.
Another relative dropped a phone.
Margaret staggered backward, her face white.
Daniel looked directly at her.
His voice was weak but clear.
“You should have let her leave with her wedding ring.”
Victor turned toward the doors.
Claire helped Daniel sit up.
He pulled a small transmitter from beneath his jacket.
The signal had switched to a backup channel the moment the rose microphone was destroyed.
Detective Mason had heard everything after all.
Daniel looked toward the chapel entrance.
“Now.”
The doors burst open.
Detective Mason entered with federal agents and uniformed officers behind him.
“Victor Hale! Margaret Vale! Step away from the coffin and show me your hands.”
Victor ran toward a side aisle.
Two agents moved after him.
Margaret did not run.
She stared at Daniel as though he had risen from a grave to judge her.
“You did this to your own mother?”
Daniel climbed unsteadily from the coffin with Claire supporting him.
“No. You did this to yourself.”
Mason approached Margaret with handcuffs.
But before he could arrest her, Victor shouted from the back of the chapel.
“You cannot prove the drug reports were falsified!”
The entire room heard him.
Mason smiled grimly.

“We were hoping you would mention those.”
👉 Daniel had risen from the coffin—but Victor still possessed the key that could lead him to the last piece of evidence.
