Chapter 3 - The Death That Never Happened

Daniel had not planned to fake his death.

At first, he had planned to go directly to the board.

He had spent six weeks gathering altered laboratory reports, secret bank transfers, and internal messages showing that Victor and Margaret had hidden serious safety failures.

But every time Daniel secured a document, it disappeared.

Every employee willing to speak with him suddenly changed their story.

One researcher resigned overnight.

Another was found unconscious in a parking garage after agreeing to meet Daniel.

Then Daniel received an anonymous warning.

Stop looking, or your wife becomes the next problem.

He immediately moved Claire to a secure apartment and contacted Detective Mason, an old college friend who now led a financial crimes task force.

Mason reviewed the evidence.

“You do not have enough for an arrest,” he told Daniel. “They have hidden the direct link.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“What do we need?”

“Them admitting what they did, or the original trial files.”

The next morning, Daniel collapsed after drinking coffee prepared in the executive suite.

He woke in a private hospital room under police protection.

Toxicology found a sedative and a cardiac suppressant in his bloodstream.

Someone had tried to make his death look natural.

That was when Daniel created the funeral plan.

The company publicly announced that he had died from cardiac complications.

A licensed medical team prepared a temporary paralytic protocol that slowed his breathing and heartbeat under continuous monitoring.

Only Claire, Detective Mason, the medical team, and two federal agents knew the truth.

Daniel believed Margaret and Victor would move quickly once they thought he could no longer expose them.

He was right.

Within twenty-four hours, Margaret prepared the widow’s waiver.

Within forty-eight hours, Victor ordered employees to locate the missing research files.

And on the morning of the funeral, someone broke into Daniel and Claire’s home.

Now, inside the coffin, Daniel listened while his mother insulted his wife and discussed destroying evidence.

He kept his breathing shallow.

A sensor beneath the satin monitored his oxygen level.

A hidden earpiece allowed the medical team in the next room to hear his pulse.

Then Victor stepped closer to the coffin.

Daniel heard the leather soles of his shoes stop beside his head.

Victor bent down as though saying goodbye.

Instead, he whispered:

“You should have stopped digging when I warned you.”

Claire heard it.

So did Detective Mason.

Inside the coffin, Daniel’s jaw nearly tightened.

But he remained still.

Victor straightened and reached toward Daniel’s chest.

Not to mourn him.
