Chapter 4 - The Key Inside Daniel’s Pocket

Victor placed one hand on the edge of the coffin.

The relatives assumed he was overwhelmed with grief.

Claire knew better.

His fingers moved toward Daniel’s jacket pocket.

She stepped forward quickly.

“Please don’t touch him.”

Victor looked at her.

His hand stopped inches from the pocket.

Claire’s voice cracked convincingly.

“I need everyone to step back. Just for a moment.”

Margaret scoffed.

“This funeral is not yours to control.”

Claire kept her body between Victor and the coffin.

“I am his wife.”

“You were his mistake.”

Margaret’s words echoed through the chapel.

Several phones captured the humiliation.

Claire swallowed her anger.

She could not let Victor search Daniel’s coat.

Inside the inner pocket was a small brass key.

It opened a safe-deposit box containing copies of the original drug-trial records.

Daniel had placed the key there deliberately.

He wanted Victor to reveal that he knew it existed.

Victor narrowed his eyes at Claire.

“You seem very protective of a dead man’s jacket.”

Claire said nothing.

Margaret grabbed her shoulder and pulled her aside.

Victor reached into Daniel’s pocket.

His fingers found the key.

For the first time that morning, his calm expression cracked.

He held it up.

Margaret’s eyes widened.

“You said he didn’t have it.”

Victor closed his fist around the key.

“He must have moved the box.”

Claire stared at them as if confused.

“What box?”

Victor ignored her.

Margaret leaned closer.

“Can you open it without him?”

“If we find the bank.”

Detective Mason heard every word.

He turned to the federal agents.

“They know about the deposit box.”

One agent asked, “Is that enough?”

“Not yet. They still have not admitted what is inside.”

Back in the chapel, Victor slipped the key into his own pocket.

Claire allowed him to take it.

It was not the real key.

Daniel had arranged for a duplicate to be placed in his jacket.

The real key was hidden inside Claire’s necklace.

Victor believed he had just won.

That confidence made him careless.

He looked toward Margaret.

“After she signs, I will retrieve the reports before noon.”

Claire lowered her head to hide the flicker of relief in her eyes.

He had identified the documents.

Now they only needed him to explain why they mattered.

Margaret pushed the waiver toward Claire again.

“Sign, and perhaps I will allow you to keep your wedding ring.”

Claire looked at the pen.

Then she looked at the closed fist holding Daniel’s false key.

She slowly placed the pen against the page.

👉 Claire was finally ready to sign—but the name she intended to write would change the entire trap.
