Chapter 18 - Claire’s Choice
The clause gave Claire and Daniel joint authority to choose one of three options.
Sell Vale Biotech.
Close it permanently.
Or rebuild it under independent medical leadership, with all profits from the canceled cardiac drug redirected toward patient compensation and research ethics.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“You should decide.”
“It is your company.”
“It was my father’s dream. Then my mother turned it into a weapon.”
Claire read the clause again.
Thousands of employees had done nothing wrong.
Researchers, technicians, nurses, and factory workers depended on the company.
Closing it would punish them.
Selling it could place the same dangerous incentives in someone else’s hands.
Claire chose the third option.
“We rebuild it.”
Daniel studied her.
“After everything they did to you?”
“That is exactly why.”
She placed the document on the table.
“We remove every executive connected to the fraud. We publish the real trial data. We compensate every patient. We give independent doctors the power to stop any product without board approval.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with admiration.
“And the shares?”
“We place a controlling percentage into a public-benefit trust.”
Leonard smiled.
“That would prevent any single family member from controlling the company again.”
Daniel signed first.
Claire signed beside him.
The announcement changed public opinion almost overnight.
Claire did not claim Margaret’s office.
She appointed Dr. Rebecca Lin to lead a new independent safety division after Rebecca completed her testimony and professional review.
The nurse who had been threatened received protection and financial assistance.
The employees who had tried to speak out were reinstated.
Families affected by hidden drug trials received compensation before the company paid executive bonuses or dividends.
At Margaret’s preliminary hearing, prosecutors played the funeral recording.
The courtroom heard her say:
Daniel is dead. His wishes do not matter anymore.
Then they played Victor’s confession inside the archive.
Margaret sat completely still.
When Claire entered the courtroom, Margaret finally looked at her.
“You stole my son.”
Claire stopped beside the aisle.
“No. You tried to bury him while he was still breathing.”
Margaret’s expression cracked.
For the first time, she had no power over the room.
No one looked away from Claire.
No one asked her to remain quiet.
