Chapter 5 - The Hospital Door No One Was Supposed to Use

Julián entered the hospital through the emergency side door.
The same door Camila had been brought through.
Dr. Méndez was waiting in a plain dark coat, hair pulled back, eyes sharp with exhaustion.
She looked first at his face.
Then at his gloved hand.
“Do you have it?”
He opened his palm.
The navy button lay there.
Ana’s expression changed.
“Rodrigo Vargas wore a navy jacket that night.”
Julián’s throat tightened.
“My cousin.”
“Your mother’s godson?”
“Yes.”
Ana looked away briefly, as if rearranging the family map in her head.
Then she led him down a back corridor into her office.
Inside, the lights were cold.
On her desk sat a sealed envelope, printed stills from security footage, and a medical file with missing sections marked in red.
Julián stared at the photos.
Camila on a gurney.
Unconscious.
Rodrigo walking beside her.
Teresa speaking to an administrator.
No Julián.
His chest tightened until breathing hurt.
“I was downstairs.”
Ana nodded.
“They moved you away.”
He touched the edge of the photo.
“She was alive here?”
“Yes.”
“Could she speak?”
“No. But before surgery, a nurse found this.”
Ana placed the note in front of him.
If I don’t wake up, tell Julián this was not the baby.
Julián gripped the desk.
For a moment, his grief nearly became physical collapse.
Ana moved as if to help him, but he raised one hand.
“No. Keep going.”
She did.
No intake bracelet.
No normal admission.
No signed consent from Camila.
A death statement drafted before all lab results returned.
An autopsy refusal already prepared when Julián was brought into the office.
Julián looked up slowly.
“Who prepared it?”
Ana’s mouth tightened.
“The administrator who restricted my access. He is close to your mother.”
“Of course.”
“There is more.”
She opened another file.
A still image from the hospital hallway.
In it, Rodrigo’s neck scratch was visible.
So was his missing button.
Ana pointed to Camila’s fingernails in the surgical intake photo.
Tiny navy fibers.
Julián closed his eyes.
“She fought.”
“Yes.”
He whispered, “Why?”
Ana hesitated.
“Your wife called me two days before she died.”
Julián opened his eyes.
“What?”
“She said she wanted to switch hospitals. She was afraid someone in your family might interfere with delivery decisions.”
He stared at her.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
Ana’s answer was gentle but brutal.
“I think she tried.”
Memory hit him.
Camila that morning, standing in the nursery doorway.
Julián, I need to talk to you before dinner.
Then Teresa calling from downstairs.
Rodrigo arriving early.
Dinner at the family estate.
The sharp pain.
The hospital.
The coffin.
Julián sat down because his knees finally gave.
Ana placed a hand on the sealed envelope.
“Camila also left a voicemail.”
“To me?”
Ana shook her head.
“To herself. It auto-synced to a hospital intake app when her phone connected to Wi-Fi.”
Julián looked at the phone on the desk.
Ana pressed play.
Camila’s voice filled the room.
Weak.
Breathless.
Terrified.

“Julián… if they say it was the baby, don’t believe them.”
👉 Camila’s voicemail proved she expected danger, but her next words revealed the secret Teresa was trying to keep buried.
