Chapter 1 - The Button in Camila’s Hand

Julián opened his wife’s hand beside her coffin.
The funeral room was too beautiful for the truth.
Golden chandeliers.
Polished floors.
White lilies arranged around a glossy wooden casket lined with pale silk.
Camila lay inside in a white lace dress, her dark hair brushed over one shoulder, her face painted so carefully she almost looked asleep.
Almost.
Julián stood beside her in a black suit and black leather gloves, tears slipping down his face as he bent close to her.
Everyone had told him not to touch her.
Not the funeral director.
Not the priest.
Not even the doctor who had signed the release.
His mother had told him.
Teresa stood behind him in a wine-red velvet dress, one hand pressed to her mouth.
“Don’t touch her hand.”
Her voice cracked too sharply.
Not with grief.
With fear.
Julián froze.
Then he looked down.
Camila’s right hand was curled tightly against her side.
Too tightly.
As if even death had not convinced her to let go.
Julián gently lifted her cold fingers and opened them one by one.
Something small fell into the silk lining.
A navy-blue button.
For a moment, no one breathed.
Julián picked it up slowly.
A torn thread still clung to the back.
He stared at it.
Then at Camila.
His mouth trembled.
But his eyes changed.
Grief did not leave them.
Something colder entered.
“This wasn’t childbirth.”
A whisper moved through the room.
Behind him, Teresa took one step forward.
“Julián, stop.”
At the back of the funeral room, Rodrigo stood near the doors in a navy jacket.
His collar sat slightly crooked.
One button was missing.
A thin red scratch marked the side of his neck.
He quickly raised a hand to cover it.
Too late.
Julián had already seen.
Rodrigo’s voice cut across the silence.
“Don’t make a scene.”
Julián closed his fist around the button.
He looked from Rodrigo to Teresa.
His mother’s face had gone pale.
Then his phone vibrated inside his coat.
He pulled it out.
Dr. Ana Lucía Méndez.
The doctor who had tried to call him three times before the funeral.
Julián answered without taking his eyes off Rodrigo.
On the other end, her voice was low and urgent.
“Use the emergency entrance.”
Julián slipped the button into his inner pocket.
Then he leaned over Camila and looked at her hand again.
A tiny strip of navy fabric was still caught beneath one fingernail.
Camila had not died helplessly.
She had fought.
Julián stepped back from the coffin and faced his mother.
“Too late, Mother.”
Teresa’s lips parted.
Rodrigo moved toward the door.
And Julián understood something that split his grief in two.

His wife had left him the last piece of truth her body could still hold.
👉 But before Camila’s hand revealed the button, Teresa had already built a lie around her death — and forced Julián to repeat it.
