Chapter 2 - The Death They Called Complications

They told Julián his wife died in childbirth.

That was the official sentence.

Clean.

Simple.

Merciless.

Complications after delivery.

Unexpected hemorrhage.

Nothing could be done.

The words had been handed to him in a private hospital corridor while his newborn daughter cried behind glass.

Julián had not even been in the room when Camila died.

He had been sent downstairs by his mother.

“Sign the insurance papers,” Teresa had said. “I’ll stay with her.”

Camila was thirty-one weeks pregnant when the pain started.

Not labor pain, she insisted.

Something else.

A sharp ache low in her body after dinner at the family estate.

Julián wanted to drive her to the hospital immediately.

Teresa told him not to panic.

“Women have pain near the end,” she said. “Camila is dramatic.”

Camila, pale and sweating, clutched Julián’s wrist.

“Please. Take me.”

That was enough.

He carried her to the car.

Teresa insisted on coming.

Rodrigo followed in another vehicle.

Julián still did not know why.

At the hospital, everything became chaos.

Nurses rushed.

Doors closed.

Teresa spoke to administrators before Julián could.

Rodrigo stood beside him, strangely quiet.

Then came the emergency delivery.

Their daughter survived.

Tiny.

Breathing with help.

Alive.

Camila did not come back.

When Julián demanded to see her, Teresa held his face between both hands like he was a child.

“Listen to me. Your wife is gone. You need to be strong for the baby.”

He heard the words, but they did not enter him.

He kept saying Camila’s name.

A doctor he did not recognize said the paperwork needed immediate authorization.

His mother guided his hand.

His signature appeared on forms he barely remembered reading.

A release.

A private funeral arrangement.

A statement confirming no autopsy was requested.

“No autopsy?” Julián said hours later, when the fog lifted slightly.

Teresa answered too fast.

“Do you want them cutting into your wife after what she suffered?”

Rodrigo added quietly, “Let her rest.”

Let her rest.

That phrase followed him for two days.

At the hospital.

At the house.

At the funeral home.

Everyone said it.

Let her rest.

As if truth were disrespect.

As if questions were cruelty.

The only person who did not say it was Dr. Ana Lucía Méndez.

Julián had seen her once in the corridor after Camila died.

She was a senior obstetric surgeon at the hospital, but not the doctor who had spoken to him.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes met his for half a second.

Then Teresa stepped between them.

Later, Julián found three missed calls from Dr. Méndez.

He did not return them at first.

He could barely stand.

Then came the funeral.

The closed whispers.

His mother’s hand on his shoulder.

Rodrigo near the doors.

And Camila’s hand clenched like a final refusal.

Now the button sat inside Julián’s coat.
