Chapter 10 - The Matriarch Without Her Mask

Teresa Vargas did not look frightened when the family board convened.

That was her gift.

She could sit beneath a painted portrait of her dead husband, wearing pearls and wine-red lipstick, while police gathered evidence outside the gates and still make everyone else feel rude for noticing.

The Vargas estate board included relatives, company attorneys, vineyard executives, and two trustees tied to Julián’s daughter.

Julián entered last.

Black suit.

No gloves now.

Camila’s blue folder in his hand.

Teresa looked at him with wounded dignity.

“My son has been misled by grief.”

Julián placed the folder on the table.

“No. My wife corrected my grief.”

Murmurs.

Rodrigo was not there.

He had been detained after the jacket evidence and changing statements collapsed his defense.

Teresa’s attorney had advised silence.

Teresa ignored him.

“You are destroying your family.”

Julián opened the folder.

“You did that before I arrived.”

He distributed copies.

Emails.

Transfers.

Draft trust amendments.

Export account records.

Camila’s letter.

The room changed page by page.

One trustee removed his glasses.

The vineyard CFO went pale.

An uncle whispered Teresa’s name like a prayer turning into an accusation.

Teresa’s voice sharpened.

“Those documents were stolen.”

Julián looked at her.

“From whom? The company you were stealing from?”

Her attorney touched her arm.

She pulled away.

“I protected this estate while all of you played at morality.”

Julián leaned forward.

“Camila was pregnant.”

“She was interfering.”

The words came out before Teresa could dress them.

Silence fell.

Absolute.

Julián stared at his mother.

There it was.

Not grief.

Not denial.

Truth, ugly and bare.

“She was my wife.”

“She turned you against me.”

“She gave me a daughter.”

Teresa’s face twisted.

“She gave you weakness.”

The trustees heard it.

The attorneys heard it.

The room heard the heart beneath the velvet.

Detective Salazar entered quietly with two officers.

“Teresa Vargas?”

Her attorney stood.

“Detective, this is a private—”

“No,” Julián said. “It isn’t.”

Salazar continued.

“You need to come with us for questioning regarding obstruction, falsification of medical records, financial fraud, and conspiracy related to the assault on Camila Alvarez de Vargas.”

Teresa stood slowly.

She did not look at the officers.

She looked at Julián.

“You would hand your own mother to police?”

Julián’s voice broke for the first time.

“No. I am handing Camila’s killer every person who helped him bury her voice.”

Teresa flinched.

Just once.

Enough.

As officers escorted her out, the portrait of Andrés Vargas watched from the wall.

Julián wondered what his father would have done if he had known.

Then he looked at Camila’s folder.

She had known.

She had acted.

That would have to be enough.

👉 Teresa’s empire cracked in the boardroom, but the court still had to decide whether Camila’s death was a tragic consequence — or a crime.
