Chapter 8 - The Night Brooke Drove Away

Brooke did not drive far.

She stopped beneath a streetlight two blocks from the house.

Her hands remained on the steering wheel.

For twelve hours, she had cared for strangers.

She had stabilized a man after cardiac arrest.

Held a frightened teenager’s hand before surgery.

Comforted a woman whose husband died before reaching the emergency room.

Now she had nowhere to sleep.

The $38.2 million in her account felt unreal.

Money could purchase a hotel suite.

A new house.

An entire block of houses.

But it could not make her mother step onto the porch.

It could not make Chloe remember they were sisters.

Brooke opened the Bible again.

Inside the back lining, she found a small tear where the brass key had been removed.

Derek had discovered it.

He might already know about the safe-deposit box.

She called Thomas.

“He has the key.”

“The bank will not release the box without identification and authorization.”

“What if he forged those too?”

“I’ve already placed a security hold.”

Brooke sent him the audio recording from the hallway and the photograph of the new lock.

Thomas told her to drive to a hotel reserved under his firm’s name.

“Brooke, this matters. They cannot know where you are tonight.”

“Why?”

“Derek’s lender contacted the property insurer this afternoon. He represented himself as the authorized manager of the house.”

“He’s trying to borrow against it.”

“He already did.”

Thomas explained that Derek had obtained a short-term private loan for $420,000 using a forged property transfer.

The loan was now in default.

That was why Derek’s phone had begun ringing on the porch.

The lender believed the house secured the debt.

Once Thomas filed the trust notice, the lender discovered Derek never had authority to pledge the property.

The bank froze Hale Property Management’s accounts.

Derek had no access to the remaining loan money.

“What happens now?” Brooke asked.

“He becomes desperate.”

Brooke looked back toward the distant porch light.

“My mother is inside.”

Thomas contacted police and requested a welfare check.

Helen answered the door.

She told officers she was safe.

Derek stood directly behind her.

Because Helen denied immediate danger, police could not force her to leave.

Brooke spent the night in the hotel with the Bible beside her.

At 2:41 a.m., her phone received a message from Helen.

I’m sorry. I didn’t know how to stop them.

A second message appeared seconds later.

Then both messages disappeared.

Someone had deleted them remotely from Helen’s account.

👉 Helen had finally tried to reach Brooke—but Derek was monitoring every word she sent.
