Chapter 19 - The Sister Who Came Back Without a Key
Chloe was released after serving twenty-two months.
Brooke did not meet her at the prison gate.
Helen did.
Chloe moved into a supervised transitional apartment and found work in a grocery store’s accounting department.
Her employer knew about the conviction.
She began repaying restitution from every paycheck.
For six months, she did not contact Brooke directly.
She attended counseling.
Completed a financial-ethics program.
Divorced Derek.
When she finally requested a meeting, Brooke agreed to see her in Thomas’s conference room.
Neutral ground.
Chloe looked older.
She placed a small object on the table.
A house key.
“It’s the copy Derek gave me before we changed the lock.”
Brooke did not touch it.
“I kept it because I thought having a key meant I belonged.”
“And now?”
“Now I understand that I used it to make sure you didn’t.”
Chloe slid the key forward.
Brooke picked it up.
“You will never have unsupervised financial access to Mom.”
“I understand.”
“You will not live at After Shift House.”
“I know.”
“You do not get to tell people we’ve repaired everything.”
Chloe’s eyes filled.
“I know that too.”
Brooke studied her sister.
“What are you asking for?”
“A chance to stop lying when you ask me how I’m doing.”
It was the first request Chloe had made that required nothing from Brooke except attention.
They began slowly.
Coffee once a month.
Then dinner with Helen.
Chloe volunteered with a debt-recovery organization, but Brooke did not allow her to work at After Shift House.
Some boundaries were permanent.
That did not make them cruel.
One evening, Chloe visited the property during a public fundraiser.
She stopped outside the front door.
The new keypad glowed beside the frame.
Brooke stepped onto the porch.
“You can come in,” she said.
Chloe did not move.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Brooke entered first.
Chloe followed.
No one handed her a key.
She did not ask for one.
Inside, residents and hospital staff filled the rooms with conversation.
The house no longer revolved around the Bennett family’s pain.
It had become larger than them.
Later, Helen opened James’s Bible and found Chloe’s letter inside.
She asked Brooke whether she had forgiven her sister.
Brooke considered the question.
“I’m learning how to know her again.”
Helen nodded.
