Chapter 15 - What Chloe Planned

Investigators reconstructed the plan from messages and financial records.
Derek needed Brooke out of the house for three reasons.
First, she monitored the mortgage.
Second, she had begun communicating with Thomas.
Third, Derek believed James’s original property documents were hidden among Brooke’s belongings.
Chloe suggested changing the locks while Brooke worked.
She packed the paper bag herself.
The scarf.
Two sweaters.
Nursing shoes.
The Bible.
She chose the Bible because she wanted Brooke to believe everything sentimental had been returned.
She did not know the hidden key had already been removed.
Derek planned to search Brooke’s remaining boxes after she left.
Once he found the trust documents, he intended to destroy them.
Then he would pressure Helen to sign the refinance.
The message thread showed Chloe’s hesitation.
What if Brooke calls the police?
Derek replied:
She has no lease and no money for a fight.
Chloe answered:
She has her nurse paycheck.
Derek wrote:
That barely keeps her alive.
Neither knew about NightBridge.
Neither understood that Brooke’s greatest strength had never been money.
It was documentation.
Brooke saved receipts.
Copied correspondence.
Recorded threats after consulting Thomas.
The lockout photograph showed Derek holding the drill.
The locksmith confirmed Chloe falsely claimed Brooke had moved voluntarily.
The porch camera captured Helen trying to step outside before Derek blocked her path.
Even the paper bag became evidence.
Brooke’s belongings had been removed from her room without permission.
Prosecutors offered Chloe a plea agreement.
If she testified fully against Derek, admitted her financial crimes, and paid restitution, she would face a shorter prison sentence.
Chloe asked Brooke to support probation.
Brooke visited her at the county jail.
They sat across a glass partition.
Chloe looked exhausted.
“I was angry at you,” she said.
“I know.”
“Dad gave you the house.”
“Dad gave you money.”
“And I lost it.”
“So you helped Derek steal more.”
Chloe began crying.
“I kept thinking if his business recovered, everything would go back to normal.”
“There was no normal left.”
“Do you hate me?”
Brooke looked at her sister for a long time.
“No. But I do not trust you.”
Chloe pressed one hand against the glass.
“I’m still your sister.”
“That is why this hurts. It is not a reason to remove the consequences.”
Chloe lowered her hand.
She accepted the plea.
Then she gave prosecutors the password to Derek’s private cloud account.
Inside was proof that Derek had never intended to repay any family member.
He had planned to leave the country after selling the house.
There was only one person he planned to take with him.

It was not Chloe.
👉 The final betrayal forced Chloe to see that she had sacrificed her family for a man who intended to abandon her.
