Chapter 10 - James Bennett’s Last Recording
Brooke and Thomas went to the bank that afternoon.
The brass key opened a narrow metal box.
Inside were the original residence trust, the recorded deed, mortgage-payment records, and a sealed digital drive.
There was also a second letter.
Thomas connected the drive to his secure laptop.
James appeared on the screen.
He was thinner than Brooke remembered, but his voice was steady.
“If this recording is being viewed, there may be a dispute over our home.”
James explained the trust in simple terms.
Helen had permanent protection.
No one could evict her while she wished to remain.
But she could not place the house at risk through debt, pressure, or another person’s business decisions.
Brooke would serve as successor trustee if any attempt at exploitation occurred.
Chloe had no ownership claim because James had provided her inheritance separately.
Then James addressed Chloe directly.
“You may believe I trusted Brooke more. The truth is that I gave each of you what you asked me to protect.”
Chloe had asked for immediate financial freedom.
Brooke had asked James to ensure Helen would never lose the house.
“I hope both choices bring peace,” he said. “But if they do not, do not punish your sister for keeping the promise you declined.”
Brooke closed her eyes.
James then revealed why Thomas had been instructed to wait.
Helen knew about the trust.
She had signed the occupancy agreement.
But after James’s death, she begged Thomas not to tell Chloe the house would eventually belong to Brooke.
Helen feared it would permanently divide the sisters.
Her silence allowed resentment to grow instead.
James ended the recording with one final warning.
“A house should protect the people inside it. The moment fear becomes the lock, it is no longer functioning as a home.”
Thomas copied the recording for court.
Brooke asked what happened next.
“We invalidate Derek’s loan. We investigate the forged transfer. And we determine whether your mother signed anything willingly.”
“What about Chloe?”
“If she knowingly participated, she may be liable too.”
Brooke looked at her father’s image frozen on the screen.
She did not want revenge.
She wanted the truth.
But truth was no longer going to arrive gently.
That evening, Chloe received formal notice that she had to appear at an emergency property hearing.
She called Brooke twenty-three times.
Brooke did not answer.
Then Chloe left a voice message.
“You’re trying to make Mom homeless.”
Brooke listened twice.
Her sister still believed Derek’s version.
