Chapter 8 - THE VISIT GRANT COULD NOT CANCEL

Samuel did not announce his arrival.
Captain Dawson coordinated with Military Police because Grant was active duty and a command safety order was being prepared. Civilian officers followed to handle any off-base criminal conduct.
Rachel Boone brought the original trust documents.
Grant’s battalion commander remained on the phone, waiting for verified facts.
At Mercer House, Evelyn saw the vehicles through the front window.
She rushed upstairs.
“Your father is here.”
Claire struggled to sit up.
Grant had taken her phone that morning after discovering she had called a prenatal nurse.
He had bruised her ribs while forcing her back onto the bed.
Evelyn pulled a blanket over Claire’s body.
“You slipped in the bathroom.”
Claire stared at her.
“I’m done lying.”
Evelyn gripped Claire’s chin.
“You will not destroy my son because you are emotional.”
Downstairs, Grant opened the front door only a few inches.
“Claire is sleeping.”
Samuel placed his cane between the door and frame.
“I’m seeing my daughter.”
“You’re not welcome here.”
Rachel stepped forward.
“The property belongs to the Claire Mercer Trust. Grant has no authority to exclude her designated counsel during a welfare emergency.”
Grant’s face changed.
He tried to close the door.
Civilian officers identified themselves.
Samuel entered with them.
Broken glass lay near the kitchen.
A bloodstained towel was hidden beneath a chair.
Samuel moved toward the staircase.
Evelyn appeared above him.
“Claire fell.”
“Where is she?”
“She doesn’t want to see you.”
Then Claire’s weak voice came from the bedroom.
“Dad.”
Samuel climbed the stairs faster than anyone expected from a man with an injured leg.
He found Claire beneath the blanket.
Grant followed, carrying coffee as though he could make the scene appear ordinary.
Samuel knelt beside the bed.
Claire tried to smile.
“I’m okay.”
He saw the mark near her mouth.
Then the bruising beneath the edge of the blanket.
He lowered it carefully.
The room became silent.
“Who did this to you?”
Grant dropped the cup.
“She fell in the bathroom.”
Claire reached for the phone hidden near the nightstand.
“No. He hurt me.”
Samuel looked at Grant with a control more frightening than rage.
“Call his commander.”
The officers moved in.
Evelyn shouted that Samuel was invading her home.
Rachel opened the original deed.
“It is Claire’s house.”
Claire began crying.
Not because she was afraid.
Because someone had finally said aloud what Grant and Evelyn had spent months making her forget.
The bedroom.
The estate.
The trust.
The future.
They were hers.
Then Captain Dawson played the recording titled GRANT THREATS — LAST NIGHT.
Grant’s voice filled the room.

After the delivery, we file for incapacity. My mother takes the house, and you won’t stop us.
👉 The recording exposed Grant’s threat, but the search of his locked office would reveal that he had already promised Mercer House to someone else.
