Chapter 14 - THE CHILD HE CALLED A KEY
Grant’s attorney argued that no criminal conviction had occurred yet.
He claimed the military no-contact order should not prevent Grant from seeing his newborn child.
Claire’s medical team disagreed.
Stress could endanger her and the baby.
Rachel presented the protection order, recordings and sedative evidence.
The judge denied Grant access to Claire’s delivery room and neonatal floor.
He could petition for supervised contact later only after the criminal case and independent safety evaluation.
Grant shouted at his attorney in the courthouse hallway.
A reporter captured the words.
“That baby is the only thing I have left.”
He did not say daughter.
He did not say family.
He said thing.
Claire went into labor that evening.
Samuel stood outside the delivery room because Claire wanted no one except medical staff inside.
Before the doors closed, he kissed her forehead.
“You decide who enters every room from now on.”
The labor lasted thirteen hours.
Claire gave birth to a healthy daughter just before sunrise.
She named her Amelia Grace Mercer.
Amelia for the mother who had protected her.
Grace for the life Claire was rebuilding without permission from anyone else.
When Samuel held his granddaughter, his hands shook more than they had in combat.
“She’s so small.”
Claire smiled weakly.
“She’s loud.”
Amelia cried against his chest as though proving the point.
The birth did not erase Claire’s fear.
A nurse entering too quickly made her flinch.
The sound of a coffee cup breaking in the hallway caused her heart to race.
Recovery would take time.
But no documents appeared beside her bed.
No one reached for her hand while she was medicated.
Rachel placed the original trust inside a secure hospital safe.
Captain Dawson arranged a confidential advocate.
Samuel slept in a chair outside the room.
Grant never crossed the floor.
Three days later, civilian prosecutors filed charges against Grant and Evelyn.
The charges included assault, unlawful restraint, conspiracy, forgery, identity theft, insurance fraud and attempted financial exploitation.
Additional charges involved the sedatives and stolen medical records.
The Army began separate proceedings concerning Grant’s conduct, false statements and violation of professional duties.
Evelyn attempted to leave the state.
She was arrested at a private airport carrying cash, jewelry and a passport under her maiden name.
Inside her suitcase was one final document.
A death certificate application prepared for Claire.
