Chapter 15 - THE CERTIFICATE WITH NO DATE
The death certificate application listed pregnancy complications as the anticipated cause.
Grant appeared as surviving spouse.
Evelyn’s company appeared as the contact for estate administration.
The form had been created weeks before Claire’s father entered the bedroom.
Evelyn claimed it was only a planning template.
The document preparer disagreed.
She testified that Evelyn asked how quickly property authority transferred when a pregnant beneficiary died.
Evelyn also requested forms for emergency guardianship of a newborn.
The preparer became uncomfortable and stopped responding.
Evelyn found another service.
Investigators recovered deleted messages between her and Grant.
If she keeps resisting, the delivery may solve the problem for us.
Grant replied:
Do not write things like that.
Evelyn answered:
Then make sure she signs before we need alternatives.
Grant did not report the message.
He continued forcing Claire to sign.
Prosecutors did not claim they had already formed a specific murder plan.
They did not need to exaggerate.
The evidence proved they were willing to profit from Claire’s death and had repeatedly endangered her health.
The sedatives could have caused a serious fall.
Grant’s violence had already sent her into early contractions once.
Their indifference was documented.
Grant requested a plea agreement.
He offered to testify against Evelyn.
Evelyn offered the same deal against Grant.
Neither received immunity.
The case proceeded.
Before trial, Grant asked permission to send Claire an apology.
Rachel delivered the request.
Claire refused.
“He wants another document showing remorse.”
Samuel nodded.
“You don’t owe him access.”
Claire looked at her daughter sleeping nearby.
“For months, he made every boundary sound cruel.”
“Boundaries are not cruelty.”
“I know that now.”
The Army completed its investigation.
Grant’s commander testified that Grant had lied about Claire’s injuries, misused government communication systems to monitor her and attempted to influence subordinates who might become witnesses.
He was suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal case.
His promotion was revoked.
Grant blamed Samuel publicly.
The independent report stated clearly that Colonel Mercer had exerted no unlawful influence.
Samuel had not destroyed Grant’s career.
Grant had documented its destruction himself.
The trial date arrived six months after Amelia’s birth.
Claire entered the courthouse carrying no blanket over her arms.
