Chapter 1 - WHO DID THIS TO YOU?

Colonel Samuel Mercer pulled the blanket down only far enough to see his daughter’s arm.
Then he stopped breathing.
Bruises covered Claire from wrist to shoulder.
Some were yellow and fading. Others were dark purple, fresh enough that the skin around them remained swollen.
Claire lay against the pillows in a torn yellow dress, one hand wrapped around her pregnant belly. Her eyes were red. Her lips were split.
Samuel’s face became completely still.
“Who did this to you?”
A coffee cup shattered near the bedroom door.
Grant stood over the broken porcelain, staring at his father-in-law as though the older man had risen from the dead.
Evelyn, Grant’s mother, remained behind him. Her arms were folded, but the color had drained from her face.
Claire instinctively dragged the blanket back over herself.
Samuel placed one gentle hand on her shoulder.
“You don’t have to hide.”
Grant stepped forward.
“She fell in the bathroom.”
The answer came too quickly.
Too smoothly.
As though he had repeated it many times.
Samuel looked at him.
“Stay where you are.”
Grant ignored the warning and tried to block the bed from view.
Claire’s eyes moved toward the nightstand.
A small phone was recording.
On its screen were the words:
GRANT THREATS — LAST NIGHT
Beside it lay the original deed to the estate and documents from the Claire Mercer Trust.
Grant saw them.
His expression changed.
Claire looked directly at her father.
“No,” she whispered. “He hurt me.”
Two Military Police officers entered the hallway with Captain Leah Dawson from the Army’s Family Advocacy Program. Civilian officers were only seconds behind them.
Samuel never raised his voice.
“Call his commander.”
Grant stepped backward.
“You’re abusing your rank.”
Samuel lifted the trust deed.
“No. I’m protecting my daughter while the law examines what you did.”
Evelyn opened her mouth to object.
Then Claire spoke.
“It’s my house.”
The Military Police moved toward Grant.
He looked at the deed, then at Evelyn.
For the first time, mother and son appeared frightened of each other.
Claire reached for Samuel’s sleeve.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“They were waiting for the baby.”
Samuel’s eyes moved to her stomach.
“Why?”
Claire began to cry.
“Because once she was born, they thought they could take everything.”
Grant lunged toward the phone.
An officer caught him before he reached the bed.
And as he was pulled away, the recording continued playing one sentence in his own voice:
May you like
After the delivery, you won’t be in any condition to stop us.
👉 To understand why Grant believed Claire’s baby would give him control of the estate, the truth had to begin with the trust her late mother created before Claire ever met him.
