Chapter 9 - THE SON MARGARET CREATED
Theodore’s hidden company was called North Meridian Ventures.
He formed it two years earlier.
The accounts contained money transferred from fraudulent loans, Ashford business funds, and charges disguised as mansion repairs.
He had purchased a condominium in Miami.
He leased a yacht through a shell corporation.
He maintained a second phone.
On that phone were messages to a woman named Celeste Vaughn.
Celeste worked for Malcolm Price.
She helped prepare the forged Willow Creek merger.
Theodore promised her they would leave Atlanta after the transfer closed.
He described Margaret as “useful until the house is secured.”
When investigators confronted Margaret with the messages, she refused to believe them.
“My son would never abandon me.”
Naomi placed the Miami property records before her.
Margaret read Theodore’s signature.
For the first time, Vivian saw the older woman’s certainty collapse.
Margaret had taught Theodore that relationships were transactions.
Now she was shocked to discover she had become one.
Still, she did not apologize.
She blamed Vivian.
“He would never have needed another life if you had trusted him.”
Vivian almost laughed.
“Trust does not require blindness.”
Margaret was removed from the mansion under court supervision.
She moved into a luxury hotel using a card held in her own name.
It was declined the following morning.
Most of her personal accounts had been funded with disputed transfers.
The court froze them.
Several relatives offered her guest rooms.
Margaret refused because none met her standards.
She eventually moved into Elise’s modest apartment.
Elise allowed it only after Margaret signed a written agreement.
“No cards in my name,” Elise said. “No borrowing. No guests without permission.”
Margaret called the conditions humiliating.
Elise replied, “They are boundaries.”
Meanwhile, Vivian’s bruised cheek became public after someone leaked photographs from the mansion.
News reports described her as a wealthy executive involved in an Ashford family dispute.
Vivian hated seeing her pain turned into entertainment.
She issued one statement:
No person earns the right to violence by calling the victim ungrateful.
She did not discuss the financial case.
The documents would speak in court.
Malcolm Price was arrested while attempting to destroy computer drives.
Celeste accepted immunity in exchange for cooperation.
She confirmed Theodore planned the anniversary dinner with Margaret.
The goal was to provoke Vivian, portray her as unstable, and obtain a signature while eighteen relatives pressured her.
Theodore had not expected the slap to be recorded clearly.
“He said she usually became quiet when frightened,” Celeste testified.
That sentence made Vivian feel colder than the slap itself.
Theodore had studied her fear and treated it as a reliable tool.
Then Celeste revealed one final detail.
A physician had signed the false declaration claiming Vivian lacked mental capacity.
