Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE LOCKED THEM OUT

Police arrived before the process server left.
Naomi had instructed Vivian to call immediately if Theodore touched her.
The stairway camera had already uploaded the recording.
Officer Lena Morales watched the video on Vivian’s phone.
The slap was clear.
So was Theodore’s order that Vivian leave property legally owned by her company.
Theodore attempted to sound calm.
“My wife became hysterical during a private argument.”
Margaret added, “She threw wine on herself.”
Officer Morales looked at the purple stain, then at Margaret’s empty glass.
“Everyone will provide a statement separately.”
Several relatives began looking for coats.
The officers stopped them.
“You were present during an alleged assault. We need your names.”
The eighteen silent faces changed.
Watching had seemed safe.
Becoming witnesses did not.
Theodore insisted Vivian had provoked him.
His cousin Elise spoke first.
“She did not touch him.”
Margaret stared at her.
Elise lowered her eyes but continued.
“He slapped her because she said the house wasn’t ours.”
An uncle confirmed the account.
Another relative claimed not to have seen anything.
The camera made his silence irrelevant.
Theodore was arrested for domestic assault.
He appeared stunned as the officer placed him in handcuffs.
“You are taking me out of my own house?”
Vivian answered quietly.
“No. You were already being removed.”
Naomi had filed an emergency termination of occupancy based on fraud, unauthorized borrowing, and violence.
Margaret’s agreement allowed immediate suspension if she participated in criminal activity involving the property owner.
A locksmith changed the administrative access and exterior codes.
Margaret stood in the hall gripping the console table.
“You cannot put me outside tonight.”
Vivian looked around at the relatives who had expected her to leave.
“No one is being placed on the street tonight. You have forty-eight hours to collect personal belongings while supervised.”
Margaret’s voice shook with rage.
“My family has lived here for eighty years.”
“Your family lost this house seven years ago. I bought it from the bank.”
“You bought our name.”
“No. I preserved your dignity. You mistook that kindness for weakness.”
The jeweler attempted to leave with the $74,000 payment still pending.
Naomi ordered the charge reversed.
The necklace was removed from Margaret’s neck and returned to its velvet case.
For the first time that evening, Margaret looked truly humiliated.
Vivian did not enjoy it.
She touched her swollen cheek.
Justice did not make the slap hurt less.
But it ensured the pain would not be used to keep her silent.
As officers escorted Theodore away, his phone was collected.
A new message appeared on the locked screen.
MALCOLM PRICE:
Burn the original resolution before they search the office.
Officer Morales photographed it.
The message transformed the investigation.
Police secured Theodore’s study.
Inside the desk they found not one forged transfer, but five.
One concerned the mansion.
One concerned Vivian’s company.
