Before marrying Daniel, Anna insisted on a detailed prenuptial agreement.
Daniel agreed immediately.
They attended separate legal consultations.
Disclosed every asset.
Reviewed every account.
Signed in different offices.
Anna expected the process to feel cold.
Instead, it felt intimate.
Nothing hidden.
Nothing rushed.
No one waiting until she was tired.
At the wedding, Melissa sat near the back.
Anna had invited her but did not ask her to participate.
Melissa accepted the boundary.
Rebecca Sloan served as Anna’s witness.
Daniel’s vows contained no promise to complete her.
He said:
“I will never confuse love with ownership.”
Anna’s voice shook when she answered.

After the ceremony, Daniel handed her a cup of tea.

“I should have asked.”
Anna looked at the cup.
Chamomile.
For one second, the bedroom returned.
Steam.
Dererick’s smile.
Drink it before it gets cold.
Daniel saw her freeze.
He set the cup down immediately.
“I’m sorry.”
Anna breathed slowly.
“You didn’t know.”
“I should’ve remembered.”
She looked at the tea.
Then picked it up herself.
She smelled it.
Took one small sip.
Nothing happened.
No dizziness.
No missing time.
No camera.
Daniel did not watch for compliance.
He turned toward a guest who called his name.
Anna stood beneath the garden lights holding the cup.
She did not force herself to finish it.
After one sip, she placed it aside.
Choice meant she could drink.
Choice also meant she could stop.
Melissa approached later.
“You look happy.”
“I am.”
“Mom would be proud.”
Anna touched Evelyn’s necklace.
“I think so.”
The sisters stood together briefly.
Not restored to what they were.
