Chapter 27 - The Bedroom Camera
The miniature camera remained in police storage for years.
When the final appeals ended, investigators offered to return it.
Anna almost refused.
Then she requested the device.
Daniel asked what she intended to do with it.
“I don’t know.”
She placed it inside a drawer for several months.
Eventually, Anna donated it to a museum exhibit on coercive control and financial abuse.
The exhibit displayed ordinary objects.
A teacup.
A pen.
A medical form.
A security camera.
A bottle of vitamins.
Each object appeared harmless alone.
Beside the miniature camera was a short description:
Used to manufacture evidence against a sleeping spouse. Its final recording exposed the person operating it.
Anna attended the exhibit privately before opening day.
She stood in front of the glass case.
For years, the red light in her memory represented surveillance.
Now it represented Dererick’s mistake.
He positioned the camera because he believed Anna was powerless.
Instead, it became an independent witness.
Daniel stood beside her.
“Does seeing it help?”
“No.”
He waited.
Anna continued.
“But hiding it wouldn’t help either.”
She walked to the next display.
Evelyn’s notebook.
A digital copy showed the final entry without revealing private financial details.
Anna touched the glass lightly.
Her mother had tried to warn someone.
Her warning arrived too late for her own life.
But it reached Anna.
It reached jurors.
It reached survivors who recognized the same pattern.
Evelyn’s voice had not disappeared.
Outside the museum, Daniel asked Anna to marry him.
No crowd.
No hidden photographer.
No surprise ring placed in a drink.
He held the box openly and said:
“You may say no. You may take a year. Nothing changes unless you choose it.”
Anna looked at him.
Then at the ring.
“I need time.”
“Take it.”
