Chapter 26 - Melissa Comes Home

Melissa was released after serving five years.
Anna did not meet her at the prison.
A social worker drove Melissa to transitional housing.
She found work doing bookkeeping for a nonprofit under strict supervision.
Her old professional licenses were gone.
Most friends had disappeared.
She accepted both consequences.
Three months after release, she asked Anna for a meeting.
They chose a quiet café in daylight.
Melissa arrived early.
Anna noticed she ordered bottled water and left it sealed.
Neither sister mentioned the choice.
Melissa looked older.
Not dramatically.
More honestly.
“I don’t expect to be part of your life the way I was,” she said.
“You can’t be.”
“I know.”
Anna studied her face.
“Why did you want to meet?”
“To give you this.”
Melissa placed Evelyn’s gold necklace on the table.
The clasp had been repaired.
Investigators returned it after the trial, but Melissa had kept it in evidence storage until release.
“I don’t deserve to have it.”
Anna picked it up.
The necklace had been inside Dererick’s black bag.
He intended to place it near Anna during the staged incident, making it appear she had stolen from their mother.
Another manufactured clue.
Anna fastened the necklace around her neck.
Melissa began crying.
“Mom wanted us to protect each other.”
“We failed.”
“I failed first.”
Anna looked at her.
“Dererick created the plan. Vale enabled it. You chose to help. I will not simplify any of that.”
Melissa nodded.
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
The answer surprised both of them.
“I don’t trust you,” Anna continued. “But I don’t hate you.”
Melissa wiped her face.
“That’s more than I expected.”
They met again six months later.
Then every few months.
Trust returned in small, measurable pieces.
Melissa never handled Anna’s money.
Never entered her home without being invited.
Never asked Anna to forget.
Their relationship became something new.

Smaller than before.
More truthful.
