Chapter 25 - The Hidden Account
Four years after Evelyn’s death, Rebecca discovered an offshore account connected to Dererick.
It contained nearly four hundred thousand dollars.
The beneficiary was listed as Melissa.
Anna immediately suspected another betrayal.
Then Rebecca examined the creation date.
The account had been opened without Melissa’s knowledge.
Dererick intended to use it as evidence that she controlled the stolen funds.
If the scheme collapsed, Melissa would become the primary financial suspect.
Dererick had planned to sacrifice everyone.
Evelyn.
Anna.
Melissa.
Even Vale.
Each person believed they were a partner or obstacle.
To Dererick, they were all evidence waiting to be arranged.
The recovered money was divided among the victims.
Anna used her portion to expand the Evelyn Harper Legal Fund.
Melissa signed away any claim without condition.
Her letter said:
He put my name on the account because he knew I was willing to lie. I gave him the weapon.
Anna read the sentence carefully.
Accountability was changing Melissa.
Not erasing what happened.
Changing what she did next.
At the annual fund meeting, Anna showed a photograph of the ceramic mug from the bedroom.
Cracked pieces had been preserved in evidence.
She explained that survivors often dismissed small inconsistencies because each one seemed harmless.
Unusual exhaustion.
Missing documents.
A partner insisting on attending medical appointments.
A family member describing private concerns to doctors.
A camera positioned as “security.”
“One clue rarely tells the whole story,” Anna said. “But your discomfort does not need courtroom proof before you take it seriously.”
The audience remained quiet.
Afterward, a young woman approached Anna.
Her husband had recently pressured her to sign a power of attorney after she began experiencing unexplained fatigue.
Anna did not tell her what to do.
She helped her find an independent doctor and attorney.
Tests later found sedatives in a vitamin supplement.
The woman left safely.
Anna never learned whether the husband intended something as elaborate as Dererick’s plan.
