Chapter 9 - The Room Behind the Garage

Diane’s property included a detached garage with a small storage room behind it.

It had no windows.

Mason decided Hunter should be moved there before police arrived.

“No,” Rachel said.

“He needs quiet.”

“He needs a doctor.”

Mason lifted Hunter from the sofa.

The boy was too weak to fight.

Rachel grabbed Mason’s jacket.

“You are not taking him outside.”

Mason shoved her hand away.

Diane opened the back door.

Rain blew into the kitchen.

Hunter raised his head.

“Grandma…”

Diane could not meet his eyes.

“You’ll rest better out there.”

Mason carried him through the rain.

Rachel followed, crying.

Inside the storage room was an old camping cot, several boxes, and a portable heater.

Mason placed Hunter on the cot.

Hunter’s teeth chattered.

“He’s freezing,” Rachel said.

“He has a fever.”

“That means he’s sick!”

Mason turned toward her.

“Go inside.”

“I’m staying.”

“You want the police to find you sitting beside him?”

Rachel hesitated.

That was all Mason needed.

He shut the door.

The lock clicked from the outside.

Hunter stared at the darkness.

He heard the adults’ footsteps fading through the rain.

He was alone.

Inside the house, Diane wiped the basement and removed the recording equipment.

Mason placed the chair and damaged shelf inside his SUV.

Rachel found Hunter’s smartwatch inside his backpack.

It still had a small charge.

She slipped it into her pocket.

When Detective Richards arrived, Diane claimed Hunter was visiting a friend.

Richards asked for the friend’s address.

Diane could not provide one.

He requested permission to search the home.

Mason was hiding inside the upstairs bathroom.

Diane refused.

Richards could hear no child inside.

Without a warrant or visible emergency, he could not force entry.

But he did not leave the neighborhood.

He parked at the end of the street and watched.

Inside the garage room, Hunter reached toward the door.

His voice was too weak to carry.

Then he remembered the SOS feature on his watch.

But the watch was no longer on his wrist.

Rachel was holding it inside the house.

The screen lit up with an unsent voice recording Hunter had made the previous evening.

Rachel pressed play.

Hunter’s faint voice filled the kitchen.

“Mom, he came back. Grandma let him.”

Diane heard it.

May you like

So did Mason.

👉 The watch contained Hunter’s first attempt to tell the truth—and Mason was willing to destroy far more than a recording to keep it hidden.
