Chapter 14 - The Price of Access
Detective Richards obtained a warrant for Mason’s financial records.
The evidence appeared almost immediately.
Three days before Abigail’s trip, Mason transferred $15,000 to Diane.
He sent another $8,000 to Rachel.
The payment descriptions read FAMILY SUPPORT.
Diane claimed the money was a loan.
Richards asked why Mason paid them before being invited into the house.
She had no answer.
Rachel finally told the truth.
Diane’s mortgage was in foreclosure.
Rachel owed money from her failed salon.
Mason offered to erase both problems if they allowed him twelve days with Hunter.
He said he needed time to rebuild their relationship before asking the court for visitation.
But he also required their help making videos.
“He said Abigail had poisoned Hunter against him,” Rachel explained. “He wanted proof that Hunter felt abandoned.”
“You knew there was a protective order,” Richards said.
“Yes.”
“You knew Abigail believed Mason was dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“Why did you agree?”
Rachel looked through the interview room window.
“Because I wanted to believe Abigail was exaggerating.”
Richards did not soften.
“And because you needed money.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Diane remained less cooperative.
She blamed Rachel.
She blamed Abigail.
She blamed the bank.
She claimed Mason had manipulated her maternal instincts.
Then investigators searched her laptop.
They found a draft custody petition written before Abigail left.
The petition claimed Abigail had abandoned Hunter to attend unnecessary career training.
It described Diane as the stable adult who had been raising him.
Mason intended to use the videos to request emergency custody.
Diane expected to be named temporary guardian.
In return, Mason promised to pay off her mortgage.
The conspiracy had begun before Abigail packed her suitcase.
Hunter’s injury had not created their lies.
It had only made the lies harder to maintain.
When Abigail learned the truth, she sat silently beside Hunter’s bed.
Her mother had not simply made a bad decision.
She had traded access to her grandson for money and control.
Diane was arrested for child endangerment, unlawful confinement, custodial interference, and conspiracy.
Rachel was also charged.
She did not resist.
Mason faced additional charges for assault, violating a protective order, witness intimidation, and attempted custodial interference.
But he still denied touching Hunter.
