Chapter 12 - The Story Diane Invented

Hunter arrived at the emergency department unconscious.

Doctors found a concussion, severe dehydration, breathing complications from pneumonia, and bruises in different stages of healing.

Some injuries were consistent with a fall.

Others were not.

Diane told hospital staff Hunter had fallen from a backyard swing.

Rachel said nothing.

Detective Richards stood beside her in the hallway.

“You called Abigail,” he said. “You opened the room. That matters.”

Rachel stared through the glass as doctors worked.

“It doesn’t erase what I did before that.”

“No.”

“I helped them hide him.”

“Yes.”

Rachel finally looked at him.

“Will he live?”

“We need the doctors to answer that.”

Abigail reached the hospital shortly after midnight.

She ran through the emergency entrance still carrying her travel bag.

A nurse guided her toward the trauma room.

Abigail saw Hunter through the doorway.

His small body was surrounded by machines.

She nearly collapsed.

Richards caught her arm.

“Your son is alive.”

“What happened?”

“We are still investigating.”

“Where is Mason?”

“He fled.”

Abigail looked past him and saw Diane.

Her mother moved forward.

“Abby, I’m so sorry. Hunter fell, and everything happened so fast.”

Abigail stared at her.

“Rachel told me he was injured last night.”

Diane stopped.

“You knew he was vomiting.”

“It was complicated.”

“You locked him in a storage room.”

“We were trying to keep him calm.”

“You left my unconscious child alone behind a locked door.”

Diane began crying.

“Mason threatened us.”

“You invited him.”

The words struck harder than a slap.

Diane looked toward the floor.

Abigail finally understood.

This had not begun with Mason breaking into the house.

Her mother had opened the door.

A doctor approached.

“Hunter has swelling around his brain, but it is currently stable. His lungs are infected, likely because he was already becoming sick before the injury and did not receive treatment.”

Abigail’s face crumpled.

“Can I see him?”

The doctor nodded.

She entered the ICU and sat beside Hunter.

For hours, she spoke to him.

She reminded him of pancakes on Sundays.

She told him his teacher had saved his seat.

She promised she was not leaving again.

Shortly before dawn, Hunter’s fingers moved.

Then the monitor alarmed.

Nurses rushed into the room.

👉 Hunter had survived the night, but when he finally opened his eyes, the first person he searched for was not his mother—it was the man watching from outside the ICU.
