Chapter 7 - The Night the House Went Silent

The storm worsened after dark.
Rain struck the windows.
Thunder shook the old house.
Mason took Hunter into the basement family room.
Diane remained upstairs.
Rachel stood near the basement door.
“I’m staying,” she said.
Mason placed the phone on a shelf.
“You’ll ruin the recording.”
“I don’t trust you alone with him.”
Mason smiled.
“You trusted me enough to take my money.”
Rachel looked away.
Hunter sat in a wooden chair.
Mason turned on the camera.
“Tell your mother you want to live with me.”
“No.”
“Say she scares you.”
“No.”
“Say she leaves you alone.”
“She never does.”
Mason stopped recording.
His face changed.
He seized the arms of the chair and leaned close.
“Your mother is trying to send me to prison.”
“She’s trying to keep me safe.”
“From your own father?”
“You’re not my dad.”
The words landed harder than Mason expected.
He grabbed Hunter by the upper arm and pulled him from the chair.
Rachel moved forward.
“Mason, stop.”
Hunter twisted away.
Mason reached for him again.
Hunter stumbled backward and struck the edge of a low bookshelf.
He fell to the carpet.
The room went silent.
Hunter tried to sit up.
His eyes would not focus.
Rachel dropped beside him.
“Oh my God.”
Mason stared at the child.
“I barely touched him.”
Hunter pressed one hand to his head.
“My stomach hurts.”
“We need an ambulance,” Rachel said.
Mason grabbed her phone.
“No.”
“He hit his head.”
“If you call, they’ll ask why I’m here.”
“I don’t care.”
“You should.”
Mason looked toward the ceiling.
“Your mother violated a court order. You helped. You accepted money.”
Diane had come downstairs.
She saw Hunter on the floor and froze.
Mason lowered his voice.
“Call an ambulance, and Abigail takes Hunter away forever. The police take the house. Rachel goes to jail. Everything ends.”
Hunter began to cry.
“I want my mom.”
Diane knelt beside him.
“You’re okay, sweetheart.”
He was not okay.
He vomited twenty minutes later.
Rachel begged again to take him to the hospital.
Diane refused.
“We’ll watch him overnight.”
Mason placed Hunter on the basement sofa.
