Chapter 16 - The Mother Who Opened the Door

Diane requested a meeting with Abigail before trial.

Abigail agreed only because Detective Richards and both attorneys would be present.

They sat across from each other in a courthouse conference room.

Diane looked smaller than Abigail remembered.

Her hair had turned almost completely gray during the months in custody.

“I never thought Mason would hurt him,” Diane began.

Abigail said nothing.

“I believed he wanted to reconnect.”

“You accepted money.”

“The bank was taking the house.”

“You accepted money to violate a protective order.”

Diane began crying.

“I thought you had become too controlling.”

“I was controlling who had access to my child because Mason threatened to take him.”

“He told me those threats were lies.”

“You chose his explanation because it gave you what you wanted.”

Diane wiped her face.

“I wanted our family together.”

“No. You wanted to be the person who decided what our family looked like.”

The words silenced her.

Abigail placed copies of the custody petition on the table.

“You planned to tell a judge I abandoned Hunter.”

“I only wanted temporary guardianship.”

“You wanted my son.”

“I wanted to protect him.”

“From me?”

Diane looked away.

Abigail understood at last.

Her mother had always resented Abigail’s independence.

When Abigail left Mason, Diane called her impulsive.

When she became a nurse, Diane complained that work came before family.

When she received the training opportunity, Diane saw a chance to prove Abigail could not raise Hunter without her.

Mason’s money had not created that desire.

It had given Diane permission to act on it.

“You left my injured child in a locked room,” Abigail said. “There is no version of love that makes that protection.”

Diane reached across the table.

Abigail pulled her hand away.

“I am your mother.”

“And I am Hunter’s mother.”

Diane began to sob.

Abigail stood.

“I will not teach my son that being family means someone can endanger him and still demand access to his life.”

She left the room without looking back.

Outside, Hunter was waiting with a child advocate.

He ran carefully into Abigail’s arms.

“Did Grandma say sorry?”

“Yes.”

“Does that make it gone?”

Abigail held him close.

“No, baby. But it means the truth is no longer hiding.”

👉 Abigail had ended Diane’s control in private, but the courtroom would determine whether the people who failed Hunter faced consequences in public.
