Chapter 8

Alexis froze.
Behind her, captives were moving toward the service tunnel.
If Hassan fired, people would die.
She lowered the piece of metal.
Hassan smiled.
“There she is,” he said. “The brave American.”
He walked toward her.
His boots splashed through a puddle beneath a leaking pipe.
“You think because one guard disappears, you win?”
Alexis said nothing.
He came closer.
“Your rescue team will not reach this level. I still have men above.”
A voice came from the darkness behind him.
“No, you don’t.”
Hassan turned.
A green laser dot appeared on his chest.
Then another.
Then another.
The shadows at the end of the corridor moved.
American operators stepped through the smoke like ghosts.
Silent.
Focused.
Unmistakable.
Hassan’s guards dropped their weapons.
Hassan did not.
His face twisted.
He grabbed Alexis by the torn sleeve and yanked her in front of him.
“Back up!” he shouted. “Or she dies!”
The corridor went still.
Alexis felt the barrel press near her side.
The operators held position.
One of them stepped forward just enough for the red light to reveal his face.
Major Daniel Reeve.
Alexis’s commanding officer.
His expression barely changed.
But his eyes did.
He had thought she was dead.

Everyone had.
