Chapter 7

The guard lunged.
She stepped aside.
His shoulder slammed into the wall.
She twisted the key ring away and drove her elbow into his ribs.
He dropped to one knee.
She did not stay to finish him.
She ran for the corridor.
Hassan shouted, “Stop her!”
Red lights flashed across the concrete.
Doors rattled.
Prisoners started calling from the cells.
“Help us!”
“Please!”
“Over here!”
Alexis stopped at the third cell.
The one the guards avoided.
Inside were two pilots in torn flight suits.
One could barely stand.
The other looked at Alexis with disbelief.
“Captain Monroe?”
Alexis shoved the key into the lock.
“Can you move?”
The pilot swallowed.
“For you? Yes, ma’am.”
The door opened.
Alexis handed him the key ring.
“East corridor. Civilians. Get them moving.”
He stared at her bleeding face.
“What about you?”
Alexis looked back toward the stairwell.
Bootsteps were coming.
“Hassan’s mine.”
The pilot hesitated.
Alexis’s voice sharpened.
“Go.”
He went.
Cell doors began opening behind her.
The prison filled with footsteps, coughing, crying, whispered prayers.
Then Hassan appeared at the end of the corridor with two guards.
His rifle came up.
