Chapter 2

Hassan snapped his fingers.
A guard unlocked the cell door and stepped inside.
Alexis did not move.
The guard grabbed her chin and slapped her hard across the face.
Her head turned with the blow.
Blood filled her mouth.
The guard grinned.
The other men laughed.
Slowly, Alexis turned her face back.
A thin line of red slid from her split lip.
Her eyes were cold.
Not wild.
Not frightened.
Just cold.
“You talk too much,” she said.
The smile left the guard’s face.
Hassan’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you say?”
Alexis leaned back against the wall.
“You heard me.”
The guard lifted his hand again.
Hassan raised two fingers.
“Wait.”
He studied her like a puzzle he had not expected.
Most prisoners begged by now.
Some prayed.
Some cursed.
But Alexis Monroe watched.
That was what she had been doing from the moment they dragged her below ground.
Watching the cameras.
Watching the shifts.
Watching which guard carried keys.
Watching who looked tired.
Watching who avoided the third cell on the left because something inside made him ashamed.
Hassan thought a cell was a cage.
Alexis knew it was a classroom.

And she had always been a fast learner.
