Chapter 14 - The Container at the Open Gate

Marcus stood frozen with Cole’s pistol against his back.

Below them, container GY-4417 rolled toward the widening gate.

Garrett clung to the platform with one functioning arm. Elena’s operators could not reach him without crossing Marcus’s line of fire.

“Pull it,” Cole repeated.

Marcus’s hand shook over the manual control.

“You said no one would get hurt,” he whispered.

Cole’s expression showed no anger.

Only contempt.

“You attacked a commander in front of witnesses.”

“You planned it.”

“And you enjoyed it.”

Marcus flinched because the accusation was true.

Cole leaned closer. “Open the gate.”

Marcus pressed the release.

The platform surged.

Garrett nearly fell beneath the wheels.

I used the control booth system to drop a concrete vehicle barrier, but the remote network rejected my command.

Elena fired one controlled round into the canopy railing beside Cole.

He dragged Marcus backward and used him as cover.

The movement gave Garrett three seconds.

He reached beneath the container and tore loose a magnetic panel hidden behind the black mark.

A waterproof packet dropped onto the platform.

Garrett grabbed it.

Cole saw.

“Destroy that!”

Marcus turned suddenly and struck Cole’s weapon arm.

The shot went into the canopy roof.

They crashed against the railing.

Elena’s operators moved.

The container passed through the gate.

Outside the fence, an unmarked heavy transport waited with its engine running.

Its loading arms began aligning with GY-4417.

We had less than a minute before the container transferred beyond depot control.

Garrett threw the waterproof packet toward Elena.

It struck the concrete and slid beneath the chain-link gate.

She caught it on the other side.

Inside was a manual cargo override key and a folded manifest.

The manifest listed GY-4417’s true contents.

Not navigation modules.

Explosive initiators disguised as defective training components.

If installed in aviation equipment, they could trigger catastrophic failures under specific vibration conditions.

The 1900 exercise was not merely being sabotaged.

It was being used to test a remote failure system on hundreds of service members.

Elena inserted the override key into the exterior control post.

The key required two biometric confirmations.

One belonged to Cole Barrett.

The other belonged to me.

My authorization had been built into the shipment months earlier.

Again, I was the key.

Cole broke free from Marcus and ran along the canopy toward the gate controls.

An operator intercepted him.

They collided near the stairs.

Marcus remained on the roof, staring at the weapon in his hand as if he had only just realized what he had become.

I could confirm the override from the booth, but doing so would record my biometric approval on the same shipment the conspiracy had tied to my identity.

It might stop the container.

It might also complete the evidence framing me as the officer who controlled it.

“Elena,” I said over the radio, “use my confirmation.”

“Sarah, the record—”

“Two hundred people are boarding aircraft.”

I pressed my thumb to the scanner.

The system accepted me.

Elena forced Cole’s restrained hand onto the second reader.

ACCESS DENIED.

Cole’s biometric profile had been revoked.

A new authorized user appeared on the screen.

CLAIRE ROURKE.

She had replaced Cole before sending him back into the yard.

The unmarked transport began lifting the container.

Then Travis ran from the loading lane carrying Rebecca Sloan’s recovered badge.

“She built the continuity system,” he shouted. “Try hers!”

Elena scanned the dead engineer’s badge.

The system requested a facial confirmation.

The control post camera activated.

A live image appeared.

Not Travis.

Not Elena.

Claire Rourke, standing somewhere beyond the depot, looking directly into another camera.

She smiled with my face.

“Hello, Sarah,” she said through the control post speaker.

The transport stopped moving.

Every screen in the depot switched to her feed.

Behind Claire stood Nathan Hale, alive and unrestrained.
