Chapter 1 - The Attack Between the Containers

Garrett Voss wrapped both arms around my waist and drove forward before my clipboard hit the ground.

The steel edge struck the concrete with a crack that echoed between the stacked shipping containers. Papers burst from the clip and skidded beneath plastic crates and discarded work gloves.

“Still feel superior?” Garrett snarled.

His breath hit the side of my face as he tried to crush me against the concrete barrier behind us.

I planted my right boot, twisted my hips, and slammed my forearm across his shoulder. His grip loosened just enough for me to force him sideways.

Then I saw Marcus Kane charging from behind him.

His fist was already pulled back.

I ducked before he could connect, caught his wrist, and drove my shoulder into his chest. Marcus stumbled into Cole Barrett, forcing both men backward toward a red shipping container.

“You came unprepared,” I said.

The words came out cold, but my breathing had already sharpened.

Garrett grabbed the back of my uniform. I drove my elbow into his ribs and felt his hands slip.

For half a second, the loading lane opened around me.

I counted the threats automatically.

Garrett in front-left. Marcus recovering near the container. Cole blocking the lane toward the metal canopy. Travis Reed on my right, tense but moving closer. Six background soldiers stood several feet away, frozen between shock and fear.

None of them stepped in.

None of them called for security.

That told me more than the attack itself.

This was not a sudden loss of control.

They had decided beforehand that no one would interfere.

Travis caught my right arm. Garrett seized my left. Marcus stepped behind me and swept his boot hard against my lower leg.

My knee hit first.

The rest of my weight followed.

Pain tore upward as my left leg twisted beneath me. For one blinding instant, the world narrowed to concrete, boot friction, and the metallic taste of blood where I had bitten the inside of my cheek.

“Who leads now?” Marcus laughed.

Garrett shoved my shoulder down until my forearm struck the ground.

My leg would not straighten.

I tried once to rise and stopped when the joint failed beneath me.

Garrett crouched beside my face. Cole and Marcus stood behind him, breathing hard, wearing the satisfied expressions of men who thought numbers had proven something about courage.

Garrett planted one boot beside my hand.

“No one’s coming.”

I looked past him.

Beyond the shipping containers, the secured vehicle gate remained closed. The distant loading-bay entrance appeared empty beneath the bright overcast sky.

That was what Garrett saw.

What I heard was different.

A low mechanical vibration moved through the concrete beneath my palm.

Not one engine.

Several.

The timing was exact.

My expression changed before I could stop it.

Garrett noticed.

His smile faltered as a pale pulse of light moved across the side of a blue container.

Travis released my arm.

Marcus stopped laughing.

I lifted my eyes to Garrett’s face.

“Listen carefully.”

The rumble multiplied.

Tires crossed the metal grates outside the gate. Headlights swept over the chain-link fence and flashed across the gathered soldiers.

The vehicle gate began to open.

Garrett stood so quickly that his boot scraped backward.

Multiple dark military vehicles appeared beyond the widening gap and stopped in precise formation. Doors opened together. Heavily equipped silhouettes stepped down and advanced toward the loading lane.

The lead operator raised one clenched fist.

The entire formation stopped.

Silence fell so completely that I could hear Garrett’s tactical watch ticking.

Then the operator lowered his gaze to me, injured on the concrete, and slowly turned his covered face toward the four men surrounding me.

Garrett lost all color.

But he still did not understand the most dangerous part.

The convoy had not come because I was attacked.
