Chapter 12 - The File That Said I Died Seven Years Ago

The photograph of my mother had been taken that morning.
She stood beside her mailbox in Maryland, holding a grocery bag against her hip. A black sedan waited across the street.
On the back was an address and a sentence:
TRADE THE RETURN AUTHORIZATION FOR HER.
The return authorization referred to the document I signed seven years earlier.
The original remained in a secure federal archive.
A copy should have existed in my personnel contingency file.
That was why the impersonator stole it.
Not to prove my involvement.
To alter the chain of custody around the first shipment.
Elena searched the open evidence container and found one page the thief had missed.
It was an authenticated summary of my Fallon recovery mission.
The final paragraph stopped me cold.
COMMANDER SARAH MITCHELL WAS DECLARED MISSING AND PRESUMED DEAD FOR ELEVEN HOURS FOLLOWING THE TRANSPORT EXPLOSION.
I remembered those hours.
Our team had been cut off after the crash. Communications failed. Two soldiers died. I reached the emergency collection point before dawn.
Officially, the error had been corrected.
But the file in Elena’s hands contained a second entry.
At 0214, during the period when I was presumed dead, someone accessed the contractor disposal system using my biometric authorization.
That access created the first return order for the navigation modules.
I had signed a confirmation the next day, believing I was validating paperwork generated by my logistics staff.
The conspiracy had begun during the eleven hours when the system considered me dead.
Someone had used my identity before I returned.
Claire Rourke’s reconstructive surgery occurred after the same explosion.
She had been listed as a supporting medic on the mission, but I did not remember meeting her.
I asked Elena to pull the casualty manifest.
Claire’s name appeared.
Status: severely injured, evacuated.
Destination: classified medical facility.
Authorizing officer: Major Nathan Hale.
Nathan had been a captain then.
He had moved Claire into a hidden treatment program after the explosion.
Mercer watched through the secure feed as we assembled the pieces.
“Sarah,” he said, “your mother is under protection.”
“Can you confirm visually?”
A second feed opened.
My mother sat inside her kitchen with two military security officers. She looked irritated rather than frightened, which was the most reassuring thing I had seen all day.
The photograph had been surveillance, not proof of access.
The threat was real, but the kidnappers had not reached her yet.
Mercer ordered her moved to a secure location.
Then he said, “The Fallon archive was breached fourteen minutes ago.”
The original return authorization had been removed.
The thief had used my current biometric profile.
My profile was now appearing on opposite sides of the country within minutes.
The purpose became clear.
Someone was building a record showing that I had directed the original theft, investigated my own operation, deleted the depot footage, and removed the final proof from the archive.
By the time the day ended, I would not look like a victim.
I would look like the architect.
Elena recovered one surviving data fragment from Daniel’s storage card. It contained a shipment ledger.
Most entries were unreadable, but one column showed destination codes.
The stolen modules had not been sold to a foreign government or criminal network.
They had been sent to active American training facilities.
Each delivery had been followed months later by an equipment failure.
The conspiracy was not only stealing technology.
It was replacing legitimate components with defective ones.
Creating accidents.
Injuring service members.
Possibly killing them.
At the bottom of the ledger was a scheduled shipment leaving Coronado that evening.
Destination: a joint aviation exercise carrying more than two hundred personnel.
Departure time: 1900.
We had less than four hours to find the defective components.
Then Mercer’s secure feed flickered.
A woman stepped into view behind him.
She had my face.
She raised a pistol toward the back of his head.

The screen went black.
