Chapter 5

The nurse turned.

“What?”

The flight medic swallowed hard.

“Mosul. Six years ago. She treated twelve of us in a schoolhouse while the building was taking fire.”

Across the room, Marcus heard it.

His face tightened.

Carter moved to Trauma Two.

The second soldier was younger.

Barely twenty-five.

His uniform was cut open.

His hand clutched something even though he was unconscious.

A silver chain.

Carter looked at it for half a second.

Then she recognized the name on his tag.

Bennett.

Her expression changed.

Only a little.

But enough.

The officer saw it.

“You know him?”

Carter’s voice lowered.

“I knew his father.”

The room did not need more.

Carter turned back to the team.

“Stay with me. He has a chance.”

Marcus followed again, angry now because the hospital was watching her instead of him.

“You’re making guesses.”

Carter kept working.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You always were good at theater.”

This time, Carter looked up.

The room froze.

That sentence was not random.

It had history.

Marcus realized too late that he had said too much.

The officer narrowed his eyes.

“You know Major Carter?”

Marcus’ mouth tightened.

Carter answered for him.

“He knows my report.”

Marcus snapped, “Your report ruined a surgeon’s reputation.”

Carter’s eyes stayed cold.

“No. His choices did.”
