Chapter 3

Carter slowly closed her book.

For the first time, everyone in that lobby saw Dr. Webb look unsure of himself.

Carter picked up her bag.

The officer stepped closer.

“Two critical inbound. One already lost pressure twice in flight. We have six more behind them.”

Marcus recovered enough to laugh.

“Major? Her?”

The officer turned his head.

“What did you say?”

Marcus pointed at Carter.

“She’s a night nurse. She stocks supplies and watches monitors. This is a Level One trauma center. I run emergency surgery here.”

Carter said nothing.

The officer’s jaw hardened.

“Then you should know who trained half the combat trauma teams you brag about hiring.”

Marcus blinked.

Carter walked past him.

The special operators moved out of her way like she was command.

That was when the first stretcher came through the doors.

A soldier lay under blood-soaked bandages, face gray, chest barely moving.

Another medic squeezed a breathing bag as they ran.

The second stretcher followed.

Then a third.

Then two more.

The lobby became chaos.

Carter’s calm changed the air.

She pointed.

“Trauma One. Trauma Two. Clear the hallway. Activate massive transfusion. Get vascular, ortho, anesthesia, and radiology now.”

People moved before they understood why.

Marcus stepped in front of her.

“You don’t give orders in my hospital.”

Carter stopped.

The wounded soldier’s monitor began to alarm.

Carter’s eyes moved from Marcus to the patient.

Then back.

“Move.”

Marcus sneered.

“Or what?”

The senior officer stepped beside Carter.

May you like

“Or I remove you from the trauma bay myself.”
