Chapter 1

Dr. Marcus Webb humiliated Carter in front of the entire hospital because he thought she was nobody.

Just a quiet night-shift nurse.

Just a woman in blue scrubs sitting alone in the cold white lobby at 5:17 in the morning.

Just another tired face waiting for the day staff to arrive.

Carter sat beside a military medical bag, calmly reading a worn trauma book with folded pages and notes in the margins.

Her hair was tied back.

Her eyes were steady.

Over her scrubs, she wore a dark medical vest that looked too serious for a civilian hospital.

That was why Marcus Webb noticed her.

And Marcus loved noticing people he could step on.

He walked across the lobby in polished shoes, white coat swinging behind him, several nurses and residents trailing nearby.

Without warning, he snatched the book out of Carter’s hands.

Then he threw it onto the floor.

The sound cracked through the lobby.

“This is a hospital, Carter,” he said loudly. “Not a library.”

A few people went silent.

A few looked down.

Nobody defended her.

Carter slowly stood.

She bent down, picked up the book, and brushed dust from the cover.

Her face showed pain for only a second.

Then it disappeared.

Marcus leaned close with a thin, ugly smile.

“You don’t belong here.”

Carter looked at him.

Her voice was almost a whisper.

May you like

“You have no idea where I belong.”
