Chapter 2

The lobby froze.

Marcus’ smile tightened.

He hated calm people.

They made his cruelty look smaller.

Before he could answer, Carter looked down at the military medical bag by her boots.

Her fingers touched the zipper.

Hidden inside the seam was an old patch.

Black fabric.

Silver wings.

A red cross split by a dagger.

Only one nurse behind the front desk recognized it.

Her eyes widened.

Outside the glass doors, a deep vibration rolled across the hospital.

The windows trembled.

Papers lifted on the reception desk.

A young resident turned toward the parking lot.

“What is that?”

Then the sound grew louder.

Heavy rotors.

Fast.

Close.

Someone shouted from the ER hallway.

“Why is there a Black Hawk here?”

Marcus turned toward the doors.

His face twisted with irritation first.

Then confusion.

Then fear.

The helicopter dropped into the emergency landing zone outside, blasting dust, rainwater, and loose leaves across the ambulance bay.

Seconds later, the glass doors flew open.

A senior officer in a black uniform stepped inside with armed special operations soldiers behind him.

The entire lobby went dead silent.

The officer scanned the room once.

Then his eyes landed on Carter.

He did not look at Marcus.

He did not look at the hospital director rushing from the elevator.

He looked only at her.

And he said loudly, “Major Carter. We need you now.”

Marcus went pale.
